HOW TO SAFETY TAKE A BANGKOK TAXI
Taxi drivers in Bangkok are a sub-culture of their own. They have their uniform, their own Bangkok map with routes nobody knows about and last but not least, their own set of rules. Taking a taxi in Bangkok is a real hassle. So here are some of the things you should look out for when hailing a cab in Bangkok.
* There's no such thing as a taxi stand in Bangkok, except in front of major department stores and hotels. If you're not comfortable with hailing a cab on the sidewalk, ask hotel security or a concierge to call one for you.
* When hailing a cab, simply wave, no shouting required. Taxis with a red light on means they're free to serve you.
* Most cabbies know English so be careful not to comment on his driving skills.
* Be aware of taxi scams. All legitimate taxis are metered, so if they tell you the price before getting you to your destination, avoid it at all cost.
* The meter starts at B35 and goes up about B10-20 for approximately every 10-15 minutes, depending on the traffic.
* If your taxi driver offers to take you for free to a recommended destination, refuse. This is a common practice of tourist scams.
* Always take note of the taxi's license plate number, color and location you take it from. This information could come in handy when you forget your belongings or when you need to report a dishonest taxi.
